Description: Austrian Pinolite is a rare and visually striking semi-precious stone composed primarily of magnesite (white) interspersed with black or dark-gray dolomite or graphite, forming intricate, flower-like patterns. When brought together, these minerals form a stunning grey-and-white pattern like nothing else on this world. Also called Pinolith, this stone gets its name from the pine cone-like patterns formed by the slow cooling of the three minerals. This unique gemstone is found mainly in the Hüttenberg area of Carinthia, Austria.

  • Color: light grey to almost black dolomite with inclusions of white magnesite grains looking like pine kernels (hence the name).

  • Origin: Sunk, Hohentauern, Murtal District, Styria, Austria

  • Mining/Collection: Millions of tons of pinolite were used by Europe’s early iron and steel industry during the 1800s and 1900s. These rocks were mined mainly for their magnesium content. They were heated to produce magnesium oxide (MgO), which serves as a refractory material for the steel industry and as a raw material for the chemical industry.

  • Crystal Form/Structure: Appears in its massive form in a magnesite quarry in Austria.

  • Hardness: 4-4.5 on the Mohs scale,

  • Chakra: This unique mineral helps you access your crown, heart, and root chakra.

  • Astrological Sign: Capricorn and Virgo.

  • Ethically mined and produced: Gemrock only buys from legal providers (paper trail). Our Cabochons are exclusively produced by our in-house gemcutters. Our staff works under legal labor contracts, at higher than average salaries, and receives all labor benefits as well as excellency bonuses and a share in the companies’ profits.
