Description: Peruvian Black Jade can only be found in a small area of a quarry on the outskirts of Peru’s capital Lima. It is also sold under the brand name “Lemurian Jade”. However, this carries the risk of the stone getting confused with other stones that have different mineral compositions and are from other countries. While the entire Peruvian black jade quarry looks the same black only the material in certain spots is stable enough to be cut. Also, only a small part of the material in the quarry is really black, while most material comes in a very dark grey, being unsuitable for lapidary work. Even of the black cutable material only a tiny fraction shows the pyrite flecks characterising this jade. So, in fact, Peruvian black jade is an extremely rare material, requiring expert knowledge to be identified within the only mine existing globally for this material.

Our staff works under legal labor contracts, at higher than average salaries, and receives all labor benefits as well as excellency bonuses and a share in the companies’ profits.

• Environmentally friendly and carbon-neutral: Gemrock continuously works towards saving water and energy, and reducing waste along its entire production chain. The remaining impact is measured via carbon footprint evaluation and is neutralized by a reforestation project financed by a small percentage of our profits from each cabochon.
