Description: For 150 years Austria was the only location known for Pinolite. In 2018 a group of Canadian gold miners discovered Pinolite by accident. Pinolite is a rare and visually striking semi-precious stone composed primarily of magnesite (white) interspersed with black or dark-gray dolomite or graphite, forming intricate, flower-like patterns. When brought together, these minerals form a stunning grey-and-white pattern like nothing else in this world. Also called Pinolith, this stone gets its name from the pine cone-like patterns formed by the slow cooling of the three minerals. The Canadian Pinolite variety contains minor traces of additional minerals such as Quartz, Titanite, Zircon, Apatite, and possibly Muscovite. Radiometric dating estimates that this mineral was formed around 500 million years ago, which makes it older than the Austrian Pinolite.
Color: light grey to almost black dolomite with inclusions of white magnesite grains looking like pine kernels (hence the name).
Origin: British Columbia, Canada
Mining/Collection: The Canadian Pinolite is either quarried or rounded boulders are collected in a river bed. Given the inaccessibility of the area, boulders are transported from the mine by helicopter.
Crystal Form/Structure: Composed of magnesite (white) interspersed with black or dark-gray dolomite or graphite. The internal 3D “flowers” have been formed during a cooling process of the hot stone. Canadian Pinolite contains also traces of Quartz, Titanite, Zircon, Apatite, and possibly Muscovite.
